Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Archangel Michael
(Poland, Subcarpathian Province, Brzozów District)
The temple is an outstanding example of medieval wooden sacral architecture of the Subcarpathian region
The church was erected in the late 1550s and early1560s as a two-bay structure (a nave and a chancel), probably founded by King Kazimierz Jagiellon . In the first half of the 17th century, it was extended with the addition of a chambered rower and eaves, and in the second half of the 18th century, with the addition of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and a small treasury vault.
The church is characterised by a uniquely monumental structure. Thanks to the use of technically perfect carpentry solutions (among others, the truss-and-tie ceiling, precise execution, and complicated corner joints), it obtained an elaborate spatial structure, which still inspires admiration for the craftsmanship of the builders.
The interior is distinguished by a painting decoration with a rich iconographic programme and a high artistic level. The Gothic figural polychromes from around 1494, with representations of scenes from the Old and New Testaments and images of saints, present a value unique to the country.
