BINAROWA
Church of the Archangel Michael
(Poland, Małopolskie Province, Gorlice District)

The church in Binarowa is a prominent example of carpentry construction growing out of the medieval craftsmanship tradition.

It was built around 1500 as a mortise and tenon (log) structure, oriented, single-aisle, with a three-sided enclosed chancel. To the west, it was extended in 1596 with a pole structure chambered tower. The side chapel of the Guardian Angels was built in 1641-1650. The church is slenderised by a steep shingled roof.

The aisle features a flat ceiling with entablatures. The interior is richly decorated. On the ceilings there is ornamental decoration referring to the patron from the beginning of the 16th century. In the aisle, there is complete figural decoration from 1641-1643 (in the background of one of the scenes, there is a view of the town of Biecz). The walls of the presbytery are decorated with Passion scenes (1650). It is furnished with altars from the early 17th century, the benevolent painting of Our Lady and Child (Piaskowa) from the second half of the 17th century (according to tradition, a gift from King Jan Kazimierz ), and the stone baptismal font from 1522, immortalised by the painter Stanisław Wyspiański.

The church is accompanied by a brick belfry from 1901 and the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk from the second half of the 18th century, situated in the fence of the compound.
