Wooden churches of Southern Małopolska

The wooden churches in Blizne, Binarowa, Dębno Podhalańskie, Haczów, Lipnica Murowana, and Sękowa are the best preserved, and some of the oldest Gothic churches of this type. They are an exceptional example of Roman Catholic culture’s medieval wooden building traditions.

The churches were built in the mortise and tenon (log) technique – they have an extensive spatial structure. Initially, they consisted of a nave and a chancel; later, they were extended by chambered towers of post-and-frame design (except in Lipnica Murowana) and eaves. They acquired a distinctive architectural form thanks to high-quality structural solutions, such as the truss-and-tie ceiling. The buildings are also distinguished by high-quality carpentry architectural detailing, emphasizing their Gothic character. The furnishings and paintings of the churches are also of outstanding artistic value.
