YASYNIA / ЯСІНЯ
Tserkva of Our Lord’s Ascension
Ukrainian Tserkva of the Moscow Patriarchate and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church
(Ukraine, Transcarpathian Region – Zakarpattia, Rakhiv district)

The temple is considered to be one of the best-preserved Hutsul-type churches.

It was erected in 1824 as a mortise and tenon (log) structure – a central building on an isosceles cross (Greek cross) plan. A centrally located polygonal dome dominates the stocky form. Profiled beams support gabled roofs with wide eaves. The walls and ceilings are covered with shingles. Inside, the nave is separated from the sanctuary by an iconostasis dating from the 18th century.
In contrast, the aisle and side arms of the cross are separated from the aisle by arcades with profiled volutes carved in wood. The church is furnished with icons from the 18th to 20th centuries and a processional flag, the so-called gonfalon, from the early 19th century with an image of Lord the Good Shepherd. Next to the church is a two-storey wooden mortise and tenon (log) belfry from 1813, topped with a polygonal dome with a decorative date inscription.

The location of the Hutsul-type church on the southern side of the Carpathian ridge, in the Transcarpathian region, is a testimony to the cultural expansion of the Hutsul in the Chornohora and Svidovec ranges, across the historical states’ borders.
