NYZHNIY VERBIZH / НИЖНІЙ ВЕРБІЖ
Tserkva of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Ukrainian Tserkva of the Kyiv Patriarchate
(Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Kolomyia district)
The church is considered the Hutsul church type, an example of the evolution of local construction solutions.
It was probably built in 1808 thanks to the efforts of Hryhoriy Semenyuk Melnyk, who, according to local tradition, founded the church with the money of thugs from the company of the legendary Carpathian bandit Oleksa Dovbush. The church is of mortise and tenon (log) construction, central, on the plan of an isosceles cross (Greek). At the ground level, the arms of the cross are closed trilaterally. The church has five domes, with the highest dome located centrally over the nave and smaller ones over the components of the cross.
Inside is the dome over the nave with cross-bracing and a unique overhanging carpentry supportive structure. Inside, a 20th-century polychromy repeats the motifs of the older one, probably by Ivan Voronyuk. The iconostasis and side altars referring to the Baroque tradition date from the early 19th century. Next to the church is a three-storey wooden belfry from 1743. In 1990 the church and belfry were covered with decoratively beaded sheet metal in compliance with the local custom.
