TURZAŃSK
Tserkva of Saint Michael the Archangel
(Poland, Subcarpathian Province, Sanok district)
One of the few surviving churches representing the Lemko type of the Eastern variety, i.e., towerless churches.
It was built between 1801 and 1803 on a picturesque hill reached by stone steps. It is accompanied by a detached wooden bell tower and a cemetery.
The church is of mortise and tenon (log) construction, tripartite, with two vestries and a porch. Covered by a multi-pitched roof with a shared ridgepole, with three bulbous turrets and faux lanterns. The vestries are covered by tented roofs with spherical finials. Over the nave, there are the sanctuary and the ”babiniec” (matroneum), octagonal domes on pendentives in the interior. The walls are decorated with a figural-ornamental polychrome from 1898 by Josif Bukovych, painted over an older layer of paintings. The furnishings include the iconostasis from the early 19th century, two side altars, the “prestol” (the central part of the altar – a cubic table covered with a special cloth), and the “proskomidnik” (a sacrificial table).
