ZHOVKVA / ЖОВКВА
Tserkva of the Holy Trinity
Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church
(Ukraine, Lviv region, Zhovkva district)
A church of the new Halych type, triple-domed, patterned on traditional Kyiv churches, one of the best-preserved churches dating from the 18th century.
It was erected in 1720 on the site of an older, tripartite, mortise and tenon (log) church and extended before 1750 to include a brick sacristy against the east wall of the sanctuary. Above each part of the church are domes on octagonal tamburs, topped with blind lanterns and round-shape beads, with a gabled roof over the sacristy. The church is banded with overhanging roofs and covered with shingles.
The walls of the sanctuary are decorated with paintings from the 18th century with Old Testament themes. In the interior, a five-panel iconostasis from 1728 was made by the artists of Ivan Rutkovich’s Zhovkva school of painting and sculpture, in addition to the main altar, pews, and a confessional from the 19th century. On the north side of the belfry, a screen belfry from 1891 was added.
