Church of the Archangel Michael
(Poland, Małopolska Province, Nowy Targ District)

The church is a valuable example of medieval Gothic carpentry construction.

It was built in the second half of the 15th century (in the year 1601 or 1607) as a single-nave, mortise and tenon (log) structure with a quadrilateral chancel, and enlarged on the west side with a belfry tower with overhanging top chests for the bells of pole construction. The body of the church is covered with a single-pitch roof supported by an orchid roof truss and shingled. The church is surrounded by eaves.

The interior is accessed through ogival carpentry portals, one with a curtain arch. The flat, curved ceiling in the nave is decorated with decorations referring the patrons from around 1500, including a royal heraldic eagle motif. In the furnishings, attention is drawn to numerous Gothic elements, the main altar in the form of a painted triptych from around 1505-1510, the side altars in Baroque style from the mid-17th century and one Gothic figure from the second quarter of the 15th century. A copy of the panel painting of St Catherine and St Agnes hangs on the wall of the nave. The original from the second half of the 13th century, called the ‘Dębno board (panel)’, is said to be the oldest surviving panel painting of Małopolska.
